How Hubert Makes A Difference In The Environment And The Community

Recycling Efforts

Our warehouse recycling program recycles all cardboard boxes received and used internally. Boxes are cut down, bundled, reprocessed and reused. . This adds up to more than 36 tons of recycled cardboard per year.

We use recycled paper instead of Styrofoam peanuts as our packing material.

Used office paper, aluminum cans and plastic bottles are collected for local recycling programs.

Hubert is expanding its eco-friendly product lines that are made from recycled materials, are recyclable or reusable and reduce environmental impact or conserve energy.

Quantity Purchasing: Negotiating to buy entire container loads of products results not only in cost savings to our customers, but reduces fuel and energy costs to ship products and reduces the environmental impact of shipping smaller quantities separately.

Our Catalogs:

The paper used in our catalogs does not utilize trees from old growth forests. In addition, 85 percent of the mill’s wood purchases are from harvesters who are certified with the American Forest & Paper Association‘s Sustainable Forestry Initiative. Its wood procurement policy supports "The Maine Forest Practices Act" which is the guidance document for all timber harvesting activity in the State of Maine.

Preferred wood suppliers must demonstrate compliance with local, state and federal laws, use Best Management Practices and maintain records of logger training certification.

Preferred purchased fiber suppliers manage their wood operations and monitor their environmental performance in six target areas:

  • Forest sustainability
  • Multiple Use of the Forest
  • Environmental Protection
  • Employee and Public Safety
  • Communication
  • Community Support

These suppliers commit to the following action plan:

  • Assess their own performance within the six target areas annually.
  • Implement action plans to raise performance levels annually.
  • Undergo independent audits of their woods and mill operations every three years.
  • Ensure a local community observer participates in, and, assesses the credibility of each audit.

Our printer is committed to preserving the global environment. They have installed state-of-the-art air pollution controls at many of their heatset lithographic printing plants. These pollution control systems minimize the impact on the environment and the community. Through improvements in the solvent recovery systems, they have reduced total toluene emissions from gravure printing operations by 77 million pounds since 1990 compared to the emissions if the improvements had not been made.

Our printer achieved 90-95 percent energy savings through the use of effective pollution control which significantly reduces the emissions of greenhouse gases. In addition, its Air Permit Compliance Program currently manages permits for all affected facilities. These air permits require substantial reporting requirements, including mandatory self-reporting of non-compliance.

Women and Minority-Owned Vendors

Hubert expresses its support of quality vendors that are owned by women and minorities and actively seeks opportunities to buy from them. Currently 10 percent of our vendors are in this growing category.

More than 100 employees have worked with this organization to provide the labor needed for their annual home repair events. Serving a 15-county area in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, Hoxworth collects, tests, processes and distributes blood and blood components to 25 hospitals. Hoxworth's purpose is to enhance the well-being of patients by assuring a reliable and economical supply of the safest possible blood.

Holiday Families

Since 1994, Hubert has partnered with William Henry Harrison Junior High School to provide holiday gifts as well as non-perishable food items and household supplies to families in need in the Harrison, Ohio community. Each year, this generosity helps more than 25 families enjoy a brighter holiday season.

American Cancer Society Relay for Life

Since 2002, Hubert employees have formed teams at the Relay For Life. The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for cancer research and programs. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.

In 2004, six Hubert teams were able to raise more than $14,000 - 27 percent of the total funds raised at the event. In 2005, nine Hubert teams were able to raise more than $28,000 - 62 percent of the total funds raised at the event.

Relay for Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated.

Individual Volunteer Time

The Hubert Company's Core Values are Service, Creativity, Empowerment, Honesty and High Expectations. The Company encourages employees to apply these values outside of Hubert. Service to our community is one method to actively portray our values. In order to provide an avenue for employees to serve the community, the company provides Individual Volunteer Time (IVT). IVT is paid to employees who volunteer during company work hours with charitable organizations. Employees may choose any organization with a 501(c)(3) designation from the IRS.

Since its inception in 2003, 85 participants have volunteered more than 536 hours.

Giving Tree

The 2004 Giving Tree provided Hubert employees with an anonymous way to help shelters and other non-profit organizations throughout the year. In one month, Hubert employees donated more than 600 items for five different organizations.

Promoting Worker Safety

Hubert is actively seeking to expand our line of products that will enhance worker safety and provide a more convenient way to solve health and safety issues.

In addition, Hubert has been a smoke-free workplace since 1990 – we do not allow smoking on our premises. This reduces air pollution and litter and contributes to the overall health and well-being of our employees.
